Phlebas

Phlebas the Phoenician, limp,
Numbed and nibbled
By currents and sands
Of silence and of strength,
Slipped from the gleam,
Slipped from the paling teeth,
And, bleary, balmy,
Dreamed of a Harmony
Far in the distance,
But sweet and silent
Approaching.
